FESTIVALS France

Poitiers, a showroom for cinema schools

by

Noémie Lvovsky, Emilie Deleuze, Cyril Collard, or even the Danish Christopher Boe (Gold Camera in Cannes 2003 for Reconstruction): these directors were all revealed by the Rencontres internationales Henri Langlois. The 28th edition of this International Cinema Schools Festival which started last Tuesday night in Poitiers will keep on with this important function: discovering new talents. Until the 20th of March, 46 short films will be shown amongst which 39 productions are in competition.

The most important European cinema schools will attend, such as the Danish Danske Filmskole, the French Fémis, the Netherlands Film & TV Academy, the two German institutions Filmakademie Baden-Würtemberg and Deutsche Film und Fersehehakademie Berlin, the Austrian Filmakademie Wien, the Finnish Academy at Turku Polytechnic, the Polish National Film, Theatre and Television School, the University Rome III, or the Czech Zgankakademie Muzickych Unemi. The young directors selected this year really come from all over Europe. Amongst the films competing in Poitiers, we also find Portuguese, Belgian, Spanish, Swiss, British, and Bulgarian productions. The jury includes producer Miléna Poylo (TS Productions – 2004 IFCIC prize as Best independant production). Besides the competition, picture director Eric Gautier will give a cinema class on Saturday. Together with director Lucrecia Martel, they will work with the students on a scene (setting, lights) in a set made up on purpose for this class. Two of the main partners supporting this festival are the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC) and the Syndicat Français de la Critique de Cinéma .
