Edward Yang, President of the Jury
The Taiwan-born director Edward Yang was chosen yesterday to be this year’s President of the Cinéfondation and short film Jury at the upcoming 58th Cannes Film Festival (11th-22d May). It is the second time he has been part of a jury in Cannes: in 2001, he was a member of jury for the official competition. Edward Yang, who was considered one of the leaders of the Taiwanese new wave in the early 80’s, has already competed twice in Cannes : in 1994, with Confusion chez Confucius, and in 2000, with Yi Yi which won him the award as Best Director.
After Nikita Mikhalkov (2004), Emir Kusturica (2003), Martin Scorsese (2002), Eric Zonca (2001), Luc Dardenne (2000), Thomas Vinterberg (1999), and Jean Pierre Jeunet (1998), it is Edward Yang who will officially grant the three Cinéfondation prizes (19th May) and the Golden Palm for the Best Short Film at the final ceremony (21st May). Now that Yang has been elected, all the jurys have found a president : the official competition has Emir Kusturica, the Caméra d’Or has Abbas Kiarostami, and Un Certain Regard has Alexander Payne. The next important news concerning the festival will come on Tuesday 19th of April, when the official selection is revealed. The programme for the Semaine de la Critique should be published on the 21st of April, and more information on the Quinzaine des réalisateurs is expected on the 26th of April.
