AWARDS Italy

Five David for Sorrentino

by

- Five statues have been awarded to the metaphysical gangster story by the young Napolitan filmmaker, Le conseguenze dell'amore, and three awards to its perfect actor Toni Servillo

The big-winner of the 49th David di Donatello (Italian equivalent of the Oscars) was Paolo Sorrentino’s The consequences of Love which got five of the prestigious statuettes. The flawless interpretation of the actor Toni Servillo, the heir of De Filippo, was particularly admired.
As a consequence, the two favourites, Cuore sacro by Ferzan Ozpetek and Manuale d'amore by Giovanni Veronesi, both nominated twelve times, only got two awards each. Same for the outsider, Certi bambini. One award each went to Ma quando arrivano le ragazze? by Pupi Avati, Il resto di niente, Le chiavi di casa, Dopo mezzanotte, and Christmas in love. Private, by Saverio Costanzo, was elected Best First Film.
As unexpected as it is, the great success of Sorrentino’s second film (after the interesting and well-acclaimed L'uomo in più) is well-deserved. It confirms the verdict of the Silver Nastri, and gives it the weight of the vote of over 1000 members of the Italian Academy.
