MARKET Italy

No Mifed in 2005 ?

by

- This year’s Mifed —the oldest and biggest Italian film market, a carnation in the button-hole of the Milan Fiera— may not take place. Ernesto Paolillo, member of the Management Board of the Aip, broke the news.

This year’s Mifed —the oldest and biggest Italian film market, a carnation in the button-hole of the Milan Fiera— may not take place, as Ernesto Paolillo, the representative of the Fiera within the Management Board of the Aip (on which the Mifed depends) who is in charge of organising the Mifed, announced.

Following the decision of the American Film Market in Los Angeles to change dates and move from Spring to the end of November, the 71st and latest edition of the Mifed took place last October, during the Milan Fiera. Then, it was announced that the next edition would start on the 28th of August and take place in Venice, during the Mostra. However, Paolillo insisted that this presence in Venice was only a rumour. Paolillo added that ‘the Mifed must be studied and reorganised’ and that as a matter of fact, ‘a study is being carried out in order to make this event something different, more modern compared to the past editions, and more competitive than the other film markets’. And since ‘this cannot be improvised, we obviously won’t be ready for the Feria in October’.

The Milan Fiera —50% partner of the Mifed— specified, in a note, that ‘nothing has been decided yet regarding the time and place of the next Mifed. In fact, the Management Board of the Aip, which met last Thursday, created a committee in charge of examining the future of the great market. The committee will meet after the Cannes Film Festival.’
