The woman who loved men

by

Amatemi is a tribute to femininity the Italian director Renato De Maria created for Isabella Ferrari (who is also his wife), back on the big screen after five years spent doing TV dramas. This film, produced by Matteo and Roberto Levi for Tangram Film, in collaboration avec Rai Cinema, will be released on 20 copies next Friday (3d June) by Mikado Film. It is quite a dare for the summer, 'considering the low figures on the box-office this week-end,' says Roberto Cicutto (Mikado), adding, 'is its worth trying though, especially since some summer "hot spots" have already booked it.'

Amatemi, written by Renato De Maria and Francesco Piccolo, is set on the seaside near Rome, a place the director sees as a typically post-modern 'non-place'. Isabella Ferrari plays Nina, a young woman her husband has just abandonned, unexpectedly. She first feels helpless and hurt but on her birthday, she decides to start a new life, meet many men, and maybe find herself. It is the opposite of what happens in Truffaut's The Man Who Loved Women. The actress confesses, 'During my carrier, I have almost always had highly dramatic roles; it was quite an experience for me to try something more light-hearted.'

In Renato De Maria's opinion, 'to take control of her life and meet new people is, for a woman, very brave. For a whole year, I read the aunt of agony column in women's magazines, and listened carefully to my female friends' stories. I hope that after seeing my movie, all spectators, men and women, will feel lighter-hearted. It is possible to recover from loneliness and pain and start all over again.'
