A box office expedition
by Vitor Pinto
Released in Spain in February, The Ministry of the Nile directed by producer and journalist Jordi Llompart became a box office hit not only in Spain (more than 130,000 admissions) but also in other parts of the globe, such as in the States, where the film realized more than 182,000 admissions.
The portrait of the first expedition to discover the source of the Nile and following the river’s descent all the way to its exit into the Mediterranean Sea, The Ministry of the Nile is the first Spanish produced documentary in Imax Format, a system that, thanks to a semi-spherical screen, surrounds the moviegoers, allowing them to watch the film within their complete field of vision. Responsible for this achievement was Catalan production company Orbita Max, in association with north American MacGillivray Freman Films. The shoot required 7 tonnes of technical material, 4 Imax cameras weighing between 18 and 36 kilos each, plus helicopters, dozens of boats and over 100 professionals from different countries.
Founded by Jordi Llompart and Christian Fernández in 2000, Orbita Max specializes in the production of documentaries and audiovisual material in various formats, Imax in particular. The Catalan company is currently developing Spiritual Emotions, a series of three 52 minutes documentaries targeted at the international audiovisual market, and aims to capture the real emotions of various religious ceremonies.
