Locarno 2005 is on!
On the 12th of July, Irene Bignardi, artistic director of the upcoming Swiss festival, revealed the programme for the 58th Locarno International Film Festival (3-13 August).
Amongst the features selected in competition, there are Un couple parfait by Nobuhiro Suwa, Nine Lives by Rodrigo Garcia, Riviera by Anne Villacèque, The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes by the Quay brothers, and Snow White by the Swiss director Samir. Outdoor screenings will take place on the Piazza Grande, presenting films such as The Rising by Ketan Mehta, Rize by David LaChapelle, Zaïna, cavalière de l'Atlas by Bourlem Guerdjou, Nashville by Robert Altman (final screening), and titles by the recipients of the 2005 honoris causa Leopards (Wim Wenders, Abbas Kiarostami, and Terry Gilliam). John Malkovich will also be honoured with an Excellence Award, and there will be a tribute dedicated to the Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro.
The programme is as varied as it is complete, with a great number of parallel sections, including a video contest, a section called 'Contemporary Filmmakers' as well as one dedicated to 'Future Leopards', documentaries, African shorts, multimedia projects (section 'In Progress'), and the 'most complete retrospective ever presented' on Orson Welles. Locarno will also dedicate special sections to Swiss films ('Appellations Suisse') and Northern-African productions, not to mention the selection for the Critics' Week.
