Austria sends Gebuertig
Austria's Union of Audiovisual and Film Industrie selected Gebuertig by Lukas Stepanik as its candidate for the best foreign film Oscar.
Gebuertig is a story of a Jewish immigrant who, on returning to his home town, must come to terms with the realisation that his late father was a Nazi doctor. The underlying message of this film is the variety of ways in which people come to accept their past. The protagonists are a Jewish comedian whose parents were murdered in the concentration camps, the son of the Nazi medic and mass murderer who continues to be haunted by visions of his late father, and the daughter of a resistance fighter who died after a fight with the commandant of a concentration camp. Gebuertig will also open the Saarbruecken Film Festival in Germany for the Max-Ophuls-Award 2003.
