Norway and Luxembourg
The Norwegian Film Institute has chosen Tyven, tyven (Thief, Thief) by Tygve Allister Diesen as the official candidate for the best foreign language film award at the 2003 Oscars. Set in a context of social conflict, this road movie was well-received by Norwegian critics, won the Best Scandinavian Film award in Gothenburg, was nominated for two Amanda awards and was Norway's entry for the Golden Globes.
Tyven, tyven is the 18th Norwegian film to join the foreign language Oscar race. To date three Norwegian movies have made it into the select five chosen by the Academy, the most recent being Elling in 2002.
Meanwhile Luxembourg’s choice fell on Petites Misères, written and directed by Laurent Boon and Philippe Brandenbourger, and co-produced by Samsa Film.
