Conference dedicated to ‘Film Education’

The European Film Academy Conference on the occasion of the European Film Awards 2002 in Rome will be dedicated to ‘Film Education’. The Conference, will take place in the Auditorium – Parco della Musica in Rome on Saturday December, 7th from 10 - 13hrs, with the aim to encourage the European Ministers of Culture and of Education to develop an agenda for a pan-European curriculum for film education with the same status that is granted to arts and literature. While some countries in Europe, especially France, Sweden and the UK have developed advanced training programmes on film and media for both, teachers and students, others are only just starting to teach film and media at school.
Chaired by French film journalist, writer and director Jean Douchet, the panel has been organised on the initiative of Italian film directors Mario Monicelli, Francesco Rosi, Ettore Scola, and Silvio Soldini among others.
During the first part of the conference European filmmakers Francesco Rosi, Stephen Frears, Wim Wenders, as well as actress Jeanne Moreau and 12 year-old German student Linda Moog will give their pleadings for regular film education at school.
During the second part European experts Jean Douchet, Horst Walther (Institut für Kino und Kultur, Germany), Vera Gyürey (Hungarian Film Institute, Hungary), Alberto Barbera (Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin, Italy), Ase Kleveland (Svenska Filminstitutet, Sweden), Spanish director Rosa Vergés, as well as Ian Wall (Film Education, UK) will present their existing national film education programmes.
During the third part German State Minister for Culture and the Media, Christina Weiss, Spanish Minister for Culture, Pilar del Castillo, and Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Culture and Education will explain their views of cultural responsibility and political action with regard to film education.
