Producer Nik Powell
by Annika Pham
After co-founding Virgin Records with Richard Branson in the 1970s, andn then the Palace Group with Stephen Woolley in the 1980s, Nik Powell is one of the most prolific and colourful producers in the UK. In 1992, following the collapse of the Palace Group, Powell and Woolley set up a new company called Scala Production. It was here that highly acclaimed films like Terence Davies’s Neon Bible, Mark Herman’s Little Voice and more recently, Fred Schepisi’s Last Orders were made.
Woolley has now left Scala for his own “Company of Wolves”, but Nik continues to make between two and three films every year. In an exclusive interview with Cineuropa, Powell talks about the European Film Academy for which he acts as Chairman, and his passion for film.
