FESTIVALS Italy

Viareggio like Venice

by

- An award for MK2´s Marin Karmitz and the Italian premiere of Le grand bleu at EuropaCinema in Viareggio

Felice Laudadio returns to the artistic directorship of the 19th edition of Viareggio´s EuropaCinema Festival, under the presidency of Luciana Castellina.
Scheduled to run from September 14-21, EuropaCinema starts almost immediately after the conclusion of the 59th Venice Film Festival and proposes itself as an alternative to the Venetian event where quality films that were unable or unwilling to go the Lido can be showcased. EuropaCinema will get underway with a special award going to one of the European film industry´s strongest supporters, French producer Marin Karmitz of MK2. This will be followed by the screening of an early film by Luc Besson, Le grand bleu, produced by MK2 and starring Sergio Castellitto and Jean Reno. Although it was made in 1988, the film has never been seen in Italy. EuropaCinema´s special guests this year include (literally) a trainload of Italian actors, directors and industry operators who will take part in a wide-ranging examination of the state of health of their national film industry, and this year´s Shooting Stars, the brightest and the best new acting talents scouted out by European Film Promotion for the Berlin Film Festival.
