AWARDS Spain

National film Prize for Gutiérrez Aragón

by

In September, the ICAA will award Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón the National film Prize 2005. The 30.000 euros prize was created in 1980 to acknowledge a professional career in the film domain.

After the actress Mercedes Sampietro, winner in 2003 and cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe in 2004, the jury justified the prize attributed to the director and scriptwriter "for the value of his view, somewhere between realism and fantasy, on Spanish society over the last 30 years, embodied once again in 2004 in the film La vida que te espera". La vida que te espera, which competed in the 2004 edition of the Berlinale, was the most recent of his films to be shown in the national theatres. After that, Gutiérrez Aragón shot in Havana his 16th feature, called Una Rosa de Francia. The director, who had already dealt with Cuban culture in 1997 in Cosas que dejé en La Habana, a story of three Cuban sisters trying to integrate into Spanish society, now focuses on the Cuban society of the 40’s and 50’s. Currently in post-production, Una Rosa de Francia, has no release date as yet. Starring Cuban actor Jorge Perugorría and Spanish Álex González, the film writes another chapter in the store of co-productions between Spain and Latin America. Produced by Tornasol Films (España), Una Rosa Francia also benefited from the support of the Cuban Institute of Art and Film Industry.
