Eastern Europe goes to Florence
For its first edition, the International film festival Nessun dogma (no dogma) , which starts today in Florence and will last until the 30th, will present a panorama of Eastern European films since1989. The event, organised by two unions, Il Gigante and l'Atelier, as well as the Tuscan media centre, includes 16 films chosen to introduce the public to Hungarian, Czech, and Polish films.
This selection is designed to cast light on what has been going on in Eastern Europe since the fall of the Berlin wall. The festival's title itself refers to the abolition of a doctrine which was political but also artistic; it focuses on the recent history of post-communist countries.
Among the titles selected are: Historie milosne (Love Stories) by Jerzy Stuhr (Poland, 1997), a film dedicated to Kieslowski by one of his favourite actors; Koenig der Diebe - King of Thieves by Ivan Fila (Czech Rep. and Germany, 2004); Musíme si pomáhat (Divide We Fall) by Jan Hrebeik (Czech Rep., 2001); Tamas & Julie by Enyedi Ildikò (Hungary, 1997); NIC by Dorota Kedzierzawska (Poland, 1999); Simon Magusby Ildikò Enyedi (Hungary,1998); Torzok (Abandoned) by Arpad Sopsits, (Hungary, 2001) Sedim na Konari a Je Mi Dobre by Juraj Jakubisko (Czech Rep., 1989); Pornografia by Jan Jakub Kolski (Poland, 2003); Návrat idiota (The Return of the Idiot) by Sasa Gedeon (Czech Rep., 1999); Warszawa by Dariusz Gajewski (Poland, 2003); Witman fiúk (Witman Boys) by Janos Szasz (Hungary, 1997).
Furthermore, a very interesting series of short films made at the Lodz film school will be screened. These are real archive gems, such as Kirk Douglas by Marek Piwowski (1966), who filmed the visit of the great American actor to the prestigious Polish school and the improvised performance organised by the students for him. The period depicted in this short film was surely a Golden Age for the school, since among the students were great masters-to-be: Krysztof Kieslowsi and Krysztof Zanussi were just beginning their studies. Other shorts will raise great interest: Kieslowski's Koncert życzeń (Concert of Requests), 1967 as well as young Roman Polanski's Dwaj ludzie z szafa - Two Men And a Wardrobe, 1958.
