A new film fortress in Milan
Soon, Milan, too, will have a Cinecittà in premises of over 80,000 square meters (previously a tobacco factory) in the North-East of the city. The renovation will cost 7.8 million euros and will be financed entirely by the Lombardy region. This sum includes €6.8M to refurbish the buildings and €978,000 for fittings.
The site will not only house the Lombardy section of the Foundation-Experimental Film Centre for fiction and advertising but it will also offer new opportunities for the schools of the City of Milan —new offices, classrooms and space for research and development. A conservation section will house the regional Archives for Ethnography, Social History, Music records, and Italian cinema. Finally, an area will be set aside as a campus, residence for the students of the local film school and the Bicocca University.
'This is a great example of how to renovate old derelict industrial areas and create structures of public interest,' explains Gianni Verga, who is responsible for land development. 'The presence of the Foundation-Experimental Film Centre and the 20th Century archives, he adds, will allow the City to develop further in terms of culture and cinema.'
