A thrilling start to the Venice Days
Two major Italian authors, Ugo Gregoretti and Giuliano Montaldo, will be in charge of opening the VeniceDays on Thursday 1st September at the Casino (Sala Perla).
This independent section of the Venice Film Festival takes place for the second time on the Lido, after last year's successful launch. Indeed, twelve months ago, the Venice Days revealed several great works, including Darwin's Nightmare, which later on won the European Oscar as Best Documentary 2004. From the 1st to the 11th of September, the screen in Sala Perla will show 14 quality films. The first on the list are the French police movie Le petit lieutenant, by Xavier Beauvois (starring Nathalie Baye), and 13 (Tzameti), a fantastic first film by the Georgian director Gela Babluani produced by the French company MK2.
Both films are low-key thrillers dealing with ordinary crime, the hidden face of Western society. Their language and aesthetics differ, but they both evoke cultural diversity, the theme most predominant in this year's selection.
