Italian cinema takes an office in Brussels
Italian cinema will soon be represented in Brussels by an office managed by the Region of Lazio, announced Giulia Rodano, the regional head for cultural affairs, during the 62nd Venice Film Festival. The decision to open, in 2006, a new branch closer to the European institutions, was made in order to better handle the interests of a region in which is 'concentrated almost 80% of the Italian film industry' and to 'represent Italian cinema in Europe and the rest of world as well as support national and international structures which operate in Lazio.'
The Brussels office will be in charge of 'identifying which European programmes are likely to help Italy or other countries when their projects involve Italian professionals, especially in the digital technology sector.'
The new office will also inform Italian professionals on all official regulations and on all projects of interest for the production and circulation of Italian films. It will maintain a financial network for the film industry which is a crucial economic sector in Roma, and Lazio in general.
Finally, the Brussels office will implement a programme designed to help the European audiovisual industry convert to digital formats and create multilingual distribution platforms.
