A special commission to find a challenger
A new procedure will apply this year for the first time to choose the Italian candidate for the 78th Academy Awards (5th March 2006). The choice will no longer be made by the jury of the David de Donatello, but by a special commission of 15 members chosen by the Anica (association representing the entire film industry), the Api (association of independent producers), and the Unpf (national union of film producers).
Among this year's jury, there are two Oscar-winning artists (Bernardo Bertolucci and Dante Ferretti), several important producers (Aurelio De Laurentiis, Riccardo Tozzi, Tilde Corsi and Pio Angeletti represent the Unpf, while Domenico Procacci, Roberto Cicutto, Angelo Barbagallo, Lionello Cerri, Sandro Silvestri, and Andrea Occhipinti represent the Api), an international sales specialist (Paola Corvino), a script-writer (Vincenzo Cerami), and a critic (Fabio Ferzetti).
This commission will meet in a few days time to elect the best Italian candidate for the Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film. Their decision will be officially revealed on the 3d of October. The favourites are La bestia nel cuore by Cristina Comencini, Cuore sacro by Ferzan Ozpetek, The Consequences of Love by Paolo Sorrentino, and Manuale d'amore by Giovanni Veronesi.
