Protti new president of the Anec
Paolo Protti starts a three-year mandate as president of the Anec (national association of film exhibitors), replacing Walter Vacchino, president of the association from 2003 to 2005.
Protti's program is threefold. First, exhibitors must get more big movies on first release every month. Secondly, a clear, enforceable agreement must be reached concerning "windows" (period of exclusive rights for the different types of broadcasters) ensuring that the priority is given to theatres. Finally, piracy, including internet piracy, must be fought efficiently, not only by punishing but also by encouraging the public to avoid it.
This program and the general policy of stronger relations with distributors, other operators, and institutions, conversion to digital technology, and internal improvements, show that the new president's ambition is to deal efficiently with the constantly changing film market.
The Apec, who met yesterday in Rome, strongly rejected all new taxes on film tickets, especially the tax envisaged by the Minister of Culture Rocco Buttiglione during the Venice Film Festival to support national production. As Paolo Protti said, 'other much more important operators should be part of such a project. Television channels as well as cell-phone and internet companies make profit from films, and this phenomenon will get even bigger.'
