Who’s Afraid of Rupert Murdoch?
“Outright censorship.” This is what Ivo De Sanctis of distribution company Village has to say about the problems that the documentary Outfoxed – Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism has come up against in seeking Italian distribution.
Directed by Robert Greenwald, Outfoxed attacks Rupert Murdoch and his television channel, Fox News. Released in America on August 6, 2004, the film grossed approximately $500,000 and earned critical acclaim. Outfoxed was also released in France, although it has yet to be picked up for distribution in the UK.
"All possible buyers have shown their interest," explains De Sanctis, who holds Italian rights to the film. "They all really like the film but, ultimately, no one has the guts to buy it and distribute it on DVD or television." The same holds true for cinema distribution. "DVD and film distribution companies are afraid to attack Murdoch and subsequently antagonize Sky [the Australian magnate’s Pay-TV channel]".
