Ticket price in Switzerland: 53 % dearer than in Europe!
Swiss spectators, who are among the most regular cinema goers, pay a high price for their loyalty. While in 2004, audience figures in Switzerland rose by 4,38 % – and the financial figures by 5,45 % – an enquiry by the French-speaking consumers Federation reveals that a ticket costs 53 % more than in other European countries. A recent study by the Federal Office for Culture, covering the last ten years, show that ticket prices have gone up by between 1,58 and 11,35 % depending on linguistic region, achieving a national average of 9,16 euros last year. Around 4,28 euros goes to the exhibitor, 3,23 euros to the distributor and 1,72 is shared between the musical rights association (0,1), VAT (0,21) and the tax on shows (7 to 15 %) levied by certain communes and cantons. With the finger pointed at, distributors are under the microscope and are now been looked at by the Federal Economic Department, which has just opened a preliminary enquiry before deciding if the Swiss subsidiaries of foreign distribution companies are abusing their dominant market position to rent their films at a higher rate than in other European countries.
