OSCAR 2006 Germany / Austria

One hides, the other stands up

by

The Austrian Film Commission has made a decision: Hidden, by Michael Haneke, will run for the Oscar of the Best Film in Foreign Language. Although this disturbing film depicting a bourgeois couple who receive anonymous videotapes did not get this year's Golden Palm in Cannes, it was a near miss. The film may have its revenge on the other side of the Atlantic (read the "Focus on", coming next week on Cineuropa).

As far as Germany is concerned, the choice was obvious. It is the success of the year, Marc Rothemund's Sophie Scholl – The Final Days, depicting the last act of resistance of a brave anti-nazi girl, which will cross the ocean.
Germany will also be represented by a co-production, Die Höhle des gelben Hundes ('the cave of the yellow dog'), by the Mongolian director Byambasuren Davaa (The Story of the Weeping Camel).
