The feature by Dutch director Mijke de Jong, Bluebird, was chosen by Holland t represent the country in the selection process for the Oscars 2006 in the category Best Foreign Film.

Huge public success in Holland, where the film came out in February, Bluebird tells the story of a young girl of 13, Merel, model child, full of talent, who finds herself one day the butt of her friends’ jokes: "What interests me are people’s choices, their principals, their influences, the reasons that prevent them from saying what they think. " And Merel, who refuses to confide in those around her, will have to face up to things and grow up faster than normal.

Produced by Egmond Film and Television production with NCRV Television, Bluebird was screened in competition at the Kinderfilmfest at the recent Berlin festival where the film received the Crystal bear for best Film. This is the fourth film for the cinema from this young director (following on from Hartversheurend (Love Hurts in 1993), Broos (Brittle in 1997), Lopen (Expelled in 1999) and numerous films made for TV.

Nominations aux Oscars will take place on the 31st January next year.
