The Giant Buddhas, Silver Dove at Leipzig
The jury for the 48th Leipzig international film Festival of documentary and animation (Germany) unanimously awarded the Silver Dove toThe Giant Buddhas by Christian Frei, experimental film about terror and tolerance surrounding the destruction of the Bamiyan statues of Boudha, in Afghanistan. The director, maker of War Photographer and who has won several awards and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2002, was hailed by the jury: "The filmmaker treated a political event with sensibility and brought powerful symbolism to an event that has recently been in the news. He understood the complexity of the problem, using considered reflection and bringing a cultural perspective to television news". Screened in world premiere at the recent Locarno Festival and acclaimed at the Toronto International Festival, The Giant Buddhas now receives an important prize. The film will be shown in October at international festivals such as Vancouver, Vienna and Valladolid, and in Copenhagen in November.
