EXHIBITORS Germany

Adapting to change

by

Admissions figures concerning have not improved in September, as revealed by the polling institute EDI Nielsen, who registered 43% less admissions than in September 2004, which brings the decrease to 27% less spectators than last year for the third term.

While specialised newspapers grow more and more concerned for the theatres most affected by this decrease, Jan Österlin, spokesperson for Cinestar, told kino-zeit.de that these bad results should not be over-emphasized.
First, Österlin underlines, this is not the first time there has been such a crisis and exhibitors have proved themselves capable of surviving by adapting to the changing behaviour and new tendencies. Multiplexes are, according to him, particularly in line with the public's new needs.
In the short term, Cinestar is counting on the upcoming release of two blockbusters, Harry Potter and King Kong, to regain optimism before the end of the year. In the long term, Österlin says, exhibitors should keep improving viewing conditions and services and emphasize the 'exclusive' character of certain releases, for instance by organising screenings at rock concerts and sport events.
