OSCAR 2006 Italy

Private Excluded Because It Doesn’t Speak Italian

Private, by Saverio Costanzo, will not be able to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences of Los Angeles, has deemed the film ineligible to compete in the aforementioned category because, although it is an Italian production by an Italian director, it was not shot even partially in the Italian language. However, Costanzo’s film will be able to compete in all the other categories.
Given the circumstances, the Academy is willing to make an exception and has asked the Italian Oscar Selection Committee to choose another film, in order “not to damage Italian cinema.”
