BOX OFFICE Greece

Gavras flies European flag

by

Hollywood productions literally ruled the Greek box office with only Costa Gavras’ film The Ax (Le Couperet) making it into the top-10, October 6-12.
Iain Softly’s horror film The Skeleton Key (distributor: UIP) grossed almost € 245,000 in its first week in Greek theatres, going straight to number one. Softly took over at the top from Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers (distributor: Odeon).
Gavras’s satire Le Couperet (distributor: Rosebud) opened on € 43,000 but on a mere seven screens and as such its seventh place in the top-10 is considered a decent result.
Admissions in Greek theatres were down by almost 10 percent compared to the week before, but industry experts in Greece say that “the unlikely warm weather that keeps people out in the open is to blame” rather than a lack of US blockbusters or hit European films.
