TVSF : call for filmmakers for Cultural Diversity

20 big names of European cinema stated their position last Friday on the project for the revision of the directive Television Without Borders. A group entitled "Defend Cultural Diversity!" and made up notably of Alejandro Amenabar, Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Marco Tullio Giordana, Claude Miller, Manoel de Oliveira, Margarethe von Trotta, Edgard Reitz, Liv Ulmann, Andrej Wajeda, Danis Tanovic, Radu Mihaileanu, Fernando Trueba... The director-signatories demand an extension to the "commitments in terms of Cultural Diversity and the promotion of European audiovisual production " with regards to new means of broadcast of works (Video on Demand, cell-phones...). According to the directors, "the telecommunications industry, participating in the broadcast of works, can no longer be exempted from their obligation to favour Cultural Diversity. It cannot, under the pretext of a burgeoning economic market, avoid paying a just and balanced contribution, and avoid the commitments vis-à-vis creativity and production, applicable to TV broadcasters.
