RELEASES Hungary

Three Magyar films in the wind

by

At the regular rhythm of one release per week since October 20th, Hungarian films (21 features in 2004) reach the national theatres in the wake of the comedy Egy szoknya, egy nadrág by Barna Kabay (read the news) which took over from the omnipresent Americans at the head of the box-office with a start of 335 000 euros of receipts in 10 days. More for the film buffs, there are two new local productions which also deserve attention: Paths of light (A fény ösvényei) by Attila Mispál and See You in Space! (Ég veled!) by József Pacskovszky.

Distributed by Mokép Co. since October 27th, Paths of light, the first feature from Attila Mispál won numerous prizes at the last Hungarian Film Week, notably Best first film, Best Actor (György Cserhalmi) and best producers (Péter Miskolczi and Gábor Váradi). A co-production bringing together Eurofilm Stúdió andInforg Stúdió, Paths of light which also starred Annamária Cseh, Lajos Kovács, Attila Soós and Balázs Czukor deals with the fate of people who have lost everything, in particular a reason to live.

See You in Space!, the 5th feature by József Pacskovszky (The Wonderous Voyage of Esti Kornél, Suspicion...) opened last Thursday, distributed by Hungarotop. Produced by Hunnia Filmstúdió, the film had Italian co-producers Palomar. Notably in the cast are Natalia Szeliversztova, Dmitrij Pavlenko, Marco Bonini, Ferenc Kállai, Eszter Balla and Ildikó Tóth for 5 parallel stories in Budapest Moscow and Rome with a gallery of colourful characters including an astronaut, a dancer, a hairdresser, a biologist, an assassin and a psychologist.
