Sofica: producers and distributors put the pressure on

by

Confronted by the threat of parliamentary reform the Soficas (finance companies for cinema and audiovisual) who direct 46 million euros per year towards French production (read la news), the professional organisations of producers and distributors in France yesterday called the government attention to an alarming situation. Underlining that the Minister of Culture and National Film Centre (CNC) have created a charter for the Soficas, reinforcing their orientation towards independent production, the signatories call on the government to remove the Soficas from list of rules which create a tax ceiling of 8000 euros. They analyse the situation in this way: "the government cannot condemn from 2007 a mechanism created in 1985, the envy of our European partners, which allows for financing of the independent production and support for cultural diversity".

Among the signatory organisations are the API (Independent producers Association), the ARP (Society of Authors - Directors -Producers), the CSPF (Union of Film Producers), the SPI (Union of Independent Producers), the SPFA (Union of French Producers of animation), the UPF (Union of Film Producers), the USPA (Union for Audiovisual Production), the FNDF (National Federation of Film Distributors) and D.I.R.E (European Independent Distributors).
