Amelio’s poetry in New York

MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) and Cinecittà Holding are taking the "poetry and rigor" of Gianni Amelio to New York. This will be the filmmaker’s first US retrospective and will include 12 of his films, both features and documentaries. Organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, "Poetry and Rigor: The Films of Gianni Amelio" will take place from November 18-30 at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters.

The director will be at the inauguration, and will present a monographic volume simply entitled Amelio, edited by Laura Delli Colli for Cinecittà Holding. Amelio will also hold an evening class for New York University film students. The retrospective will open on November18 with Stolen Children (o.t. Il ladro di bambini), the 1992 Cannes Grand Jury Prize winner. The film will be followed by political thriller Blow to the Heart (o.t. Colpire al cuore with Jean-Luis Trintignant, the first of Amelio’s to be widely distributed in the US, The Way We Laughed (o.t. Così ridevano, the 1998 Golden Lion winner in Venice, and the extraordinary Open Doors (o.t. Porte aperte, 1990), with Gian Maria Volontè, which picked up a Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film. There will also be documentaries and television work, on subjects ranging from the conflict in the Balkans as recounted by children (Non è finita la pace, cioè la guerra, 1997); to integration difficulties experienced by southern Italians who immigrated to the North just after WWII in Poveri Noi (1999); to the "behind-the-scenes" of Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1900 .

The director will return to Italy on November 19 to finish editing his new film, The Missing Start (o.t. La stella che non c'è), inspired by the Ermanno Rea’s novel "La dismissione" and starring Sergio Castellitto.
