Cvitkovič wins at the Turin Film Festival
Slovenian director Jan Cvitkovič won Best Film at the 23rd Turin Film Festival (11-19 novembre) with Odgrobadogroba / Gravehopping, ex aequo with Utsukushiki-Tennen by Tsubokawa Takushi. The jury – made up of Rita Azevedo Gomes (Portugal), Giuseppe Gaudino (Italy), Cédric Kahn (France), Nacer Khemir (Tunisia) and Amir Naderi (Iran) – awarded10,250 euro to each winner.
Full of black humour and pop music, Gravehopping chronicles the daily life of a "professional funeral speechwriter," his family and friends. The film, which recently won top honours at the Cottbus Festival of East European Cinema, was produced by Staragara, Propeler Film Zagreb and RTV Slovenja, and co-financed by the Slovenian Film Fund and the Croatian Cultural Ministry. Jan Cvitkovič also picked up the Best Young Director Award at the 53rd edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival (see our interview with Cvitkovič).
