Polish Cinema in America

by

Dream Entertainment has purchased the US distribution rights for Jestem (I Am), Dorota Kędzierzawska’s new film. This Californian society, which specialises in production, has decided to distribute the Polish film based on it’s artistic values, which are considered as a “treasure in the realm of poetical films such as The Tin Drum or My Life As a Dog”.

The film premiered in Polish cinemas November 4th on 20 copies, and it was enthusiastically appreciated at the Gdynia Polish Film Festival 2005, where it received its prize. Three other rewards were given to it by the festival’s jury: one for its music by Michael Nyman, for its sound by Bartek Putkiewicz and its images by Arthur Reinhart.
In Jestem, Kędzierzawska lyrically illustrates the story of an abandoned boy who lives a lonely life on a boat at the river bank. The only person to take interest in him is a girl who, with time, will become his only and true friend.

For some time now, Polish cinema enjoys a good reputation in the US. Moj Nikifor, the winner at the Karlovy Vary Festival, as well a victor at the Athens Festival with the FIPRESCI award, has recently received two important American rewards. In addition, the Golden Hugo for director Krzysztof Krauze and award for best actor to Roman Gancarczyk (read the news from 18th October), both given at the Chicago, Moj Nikifor has achieved the first prize in the European Film category at the 28th edition of the Denver International Film Festival. This is not the first Polish success in the above mentioned festival. In 2001, Robert Gliński received the award in Denver for Cześć Tereska (Hello Tereska), while in 2003 Jerzy Stuhr received the audience’s prize for Pogoda na jutro (The Weather for Tomorrow).
