GOLDEN GLOBES

34 European films qualified

by

34 out of the 60 foreign language films qualified for the Golden Globe 2006 Awards are European titles. The final nominees will be announced today in Beverly Hills.
Organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes are often seen as the anteroom for the Hollywood Academy Awards, but unlike the Oscars, they include several categories in the TV domain, as well those for cinema. The 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 16, 2006.

Italy heads the list of the European countries with the most qualified films, a total of nine titles including Benigni's latest opus Tiger and the snow, Giordana's Once you are born, you can't no longer hide and Cristina Comencini's Don't tell. Germany takes the second place with 5 qualified films, including multi award winner Sophie School, the final days by Marc Rothemund and Michael Schorr's Schultze Gets the Blues (read the article). Spain, which won last year with Alejandro Amenabar's The sea inside might compete this year with two box office hits: Benito Zambrano's musical Habana Blues and Álex de la Iglesia's The Ferpect Crime. Other acclaimed European films of 2005 are also taking their chances, including Cannes winner The Child and EFA's best film of the year, Hidden.
