"Peer to peer" legalized
A real media battle broke out in France, following the unexpected adoption by French deputies during the night between Wednesday and Thursday (against the government's opinion) of amendments legalizing "peer to peer" exchanges of film files – and music also – on the Internet for non-commercial use and introducing a remuneration for artists through internet providers.
There have already been many statements from supporters and opponents to this extension of the exception to copyrights of private copy to downloading on the web. Among them, numerous professional film and audiovisual organizations (BLIC, BLOC, ARP, SACD, USPA, Procirep...) are exhorting "the government not to destroy the financing system of cinema and audiovisual creation". They are asking public institutions and parliamentarians to find a solution in order to avoid "the expropriation of copyrights on the Internet" that will result from the legalization of "peer to peer" downloading.
To be continued.
