The surprise local productions

Even though, as Cineuropa announced in news in November, admissions have dropped in Holland, as in all other European countries, some Dutch films have made the news by reaching the top 20 for the year, taking some market share from some big American productions.

With a global drop in receipts of 12.7%, from €154.1m in 2004 to €134.5m and a drop of 11.2% in admissions (from 23 m in 2004 to 20.5m this year), the year was nonetheless a good one for distributor Independent Films Nederland who had three big national successes, (Schnitzel Paradise [+see also:

to which Cineuropa has dedicated a Focus, De Kameleon 2, Zoop In Africa) which together took 12.43% of the market share, arriving just behind the American subsidiaries UIP (22.24%) and Warner Bros (19.34%). The 39 local productions which came out during the year shared 13.56% of the market, a rise of 4.36% compared to the previous year (9.2%).

But it was still the American blockbusters which grabbed the lion’s share, occupying ten places in the top 20, with the fourth episode of Harry Potter (€7.5m), followed by Madagascar (€6.3m), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory arriving in third position (€4.3m.) Note too that Het Paard Van Sinterklaas by Mischa Kamp released in cinemas on the 14th October by Warner Bros reached 15th position with 350,000 admissions and €2.1m of receipts in a few weeks.
