BERLINALE 2006 Denmark

A Soap to boost the competition

by

First time director Pernille Fisher Christensen will bring a breeze of fresh air and humorous touch to this year’s Berlinale competition with her warm and unconventional love story A Soap written by established scripwriter Kim Fupz Aakeson for whom it will be the 6th film running for the Golden Bear.

A Soap is the story of two neighbours and their offbeat search for love and lust. 32-year old Charlotte (Trine Dyrholm) who just left her husband, winds up in an apartment upstairs from Veronica (David Dencik), a transsexual who likes to stay at home with her tiny dog and her favourite TV soap opera. Meanwhile, Charlotte goes on a frenzy of one-night stands. An assault, a new bed and a set of white curtains bring the two of them together as they end up the leading ladies of their own tumultuous love story.
A Soap is Fischer Christensen’s first feature length film, but her talent has already been celebrated by her peers. In 2000, India her graduate film at the National Film School of Denmark was awarded at Cannes’ Cinefondation and in 2003 Habibi My Love won the Danish Robert Award for Best Short Fiction film. The director has teamed up with a professional Danish film crew including -apart from scriptwriter Aakeson- cinematographer Erik Molberg (Flies On The Wall), production designer Rasmus Thjellesen (Pusher 2 & 3) and editor Åsa Mossberg (Scratch).

The €900,000 film was also co-produced in Denmark by Zentropa Entertainment and Film Gear Aps, and in Sweden by Garage Film with the support of the Swedish Film Institute. International sales are handled by Trust Film Sales, and the Danish release through Nordisk Film is scheduled for April 7th, 2006.
