International coproductions

by

Only a few years ago, Polish producers were not able to attract significant money from foreign investors. The most fertile period in terms of co-production were the early 90s: 9 in 1991, 13 in 1992, 8 in 1993. In the beginning of the 2000s, (institutionally supported) co-productions were much scarcer: 2 in 2000 and 2001, 4 in 2002, 0 in 2003 and 1 in 2004. The most frequent partners of the past 15 years have been Germany (22 co-productions), France (21), Hungary (8), and England (7).
2005 proved a good year for co-productions, which indicates that exchanges with European partners should intensify in the future. Amongst the recent co-productions, we can mention The Call of the Toad by Robert Gliński (with Germany), Masz na imię Justyna ('Your Name Is Justine') by Franco de Pena (Luxembourg), Persona non grata by Krzysztof Zanussi (Italy), and Kochankowie roku tygrysa ('The Lovers of the Year of the Tiger') by Jacek Bromski (China).

Obviously, despite a lack of sufficient resources, local producers seem to know how to value Polish talents and find foreign co-producers to help stimulate film production in Poland.
