EVENT Poland

Kieślowski Year

by

Although the 10th anniversary of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s death is March 13, 2006, the world of international cinema began celebrating the Polish director at the end of 2005 and the Polish Film Institute has declared 2006 "Kieślowski Year".

After the large retrospective organised at the end of 2005 in Holland, the Swiss began their own celebration on March 3, in Zurich, Bern and Basel, where many of Kieślowski’s films, including little know television work, can be (re)seen. The entire Decalogue will also be screened at the British Film Institute in London, and in April will be a part of the complete retrospective of the director’s work at the Lincoln Center in New York. Festivals in Calcutta and Sao Paulo will also pay tribute to the legendary director.

A large exhibition dedicated to the man behind Three Colours will take place in Germany. Organised by the Lodz Film Museum, Krzysztof Kieślowski: Traces and Souvenirs opened at the at Willy-Brandt-Haus during this year’s Berlin Film Festival, and includes heretofore unseen photographs and archive material, press clippings, posters, reviews and publications. On April 9, the exhibition will move to the Landesmuseum in Wiesbaden, as part of the framework of the Central & Eastern European Festival “Go East”; in May it will travel to Düsseldorf, before moving on to Vienna in autumn.

In Poland, following a series of film screenings, conferences and seminars dedicated to the director (Krzysztof Kieślowski: In memoriam, in Katowice), a retrospective is set for many towns throughout the country. Kieślowski’s films will also be broadcast on public television channels such as TVP and TVP Kultura and private broadcaster Kino Polska.
