Carlo Virzì, who co-wrote the script with his brother Paolo, Ciabatti and Francesco Bruni, shot the film between Rome and the Argentario, choosing non-professional actors for the leads.

Adelmo torna da me is set in the late 1980s, shortly before Tangentopoli and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Virzì chose the young Gabriella Belisario for the role of Camilla, a wealthy teenager on vacation in Orbetello set on making her summer dream of kissing a boy come true. Camilla chooses her prey in Adelmo (Jacopo Petrini), the pool boy at the family’s villa. They are surrounded by a world of adults: "All monsters".
