Starring Ana Moreira, a regular in Villaverde's films, Transe tells the story of a young woman who leaves behind her family in Russia to journey through Europe in search of a better life. However, the better life she dreamt turns into a hell, with the director portraying Europe as a continent where the weakest are inevitably exploited.
"Nowadays, human trafficking is one of the biggest plagues of Europe, a continent that is opening itself internally, yet also increasingly closing itself off to everything that is exterior. The trafficking of men and women, supported by organised mafias, is a lucrative business, and the misery and degradation it brings with it is terrible for Europe".
Produced by Paulo Branco for Clap Filmes, Transe marks the return of the filmmaker behind the acclaimed titles Alex, Três Irmãos, Os Mutantes and Água e Sal. Gemini Films will handle international sales.
