This year’s Roman spring has been characterised by French cinema. Ending today, after three days packed with discussions, screenings and Q&As at the French Academy and the Sala Trevi cinema, is the programme Printemps du nouveau cinéma français, dedicated in large part to one of the directors most highly acclaimed by young film lovers: Arnaud Desplechin, who directed, among many other films, Kings and Queen [+see also:

For the occasion, the director was joined by one of the new muses of French cinema, actress Emmanuelle Devos, who many will remember from the Cesar award-winning film Read My Lips [+see also:

and who stars in Kings and Queen in the role of Nora, alongside Mathieu Amalric.

In creating this character, said Desplechin, "I thought of a mix between the frigid main character of Marnie, the formidable Sharon Stone of Casino and Gena Rowalands in Another Woman". But this is just the more recent result of a long artistic relationship: "Desplechin and I became friends," recounted Emmanuelle Devos, "on his first film, La via des morts, made 15 years ago. I don’t know if I represent his ideal of femininity and in real life we rarely see each other. But I do know that he has always been by my side during important moments and I am honoured to have been in all of his films because I consider him to be one of the most talented filmmakers of today".

Printemps du nouveau cinéma français will end tonight at Villa Medici with the Italian premiere of Gentille by Sophie Fillières, a comedy that has finally given Devos, who has played numerous complex and dramatic characters, a chance to play a comical role, which she had been wanting to do for some time. Here, she plays an emancipated Parisian who panics when her boyfriend asks her to marry him.
