€755m for MEDIA 2007

by

Yesterday, the EU Council of Ministers of Culture and the Audiovisual approved a political accord on the upcoming MEDIA 2007 programme, whose budget will reach €755m for a 7-year period. This is seen as a "modest" amount, as the Commission had initially proposed a budget of just over €1bn.

According to Commissioner Viviane Reding, the new budget will ask for some new changes to the programme’s priorities. As of next January, the new MEDIA programme (which will replace both the current MEDIA Plus and MEDIA Training) should "focus on the essential, the circulation of films" and on the new EU members. Also, according to a spokesperson for Mrs Reding, "projects that have already been co-financed by MEDIA will find it harder to get financed again".

The European Commission will organise an information conference on MEDIA 2007 on Tuesday 23 at 3:30 pm in the Espace Ambassadeurs/Palais de Festivals. The conference is open to all professionals present at Cannes, who can attend it without prior registration.
