Goodbye, Christophe de Ponfilly
French director, journalist and writer Christophe de Ponfilly committed suicide Tuesday at the age of 55.
A passionate expert on Afghanistan, he made several documentaries on the country, including Massoud, l'Afghan, which was released in theatres. He had just finished filming his first feature film, L'étoile du soldat [+see also:
film profile] (see article), a Films du Losange production backed by Eurimages and the Centre national de la Cinématographie (CNC).
Véronique Cayla, managing director of the CNC, today paid respect to the filmmaker's "strength of consistency", which "allowed everyone to discover a country, Afghanistan, through images and writing, not only by telling a murderous story of this region, but especially by focusing on those who have to suffer, the men and women who live there today."
