Finns want Revolution

by

Revolution, the documentary musical directed by Jouko Aaltone, has become the biggest box office hit ever for a Finnish documentary film with over 11,026 admissions from only two screens since its domestic release on March 17 by Sandrew Metronome Distribution.

The documentary film about the 70s generation’s fight for a better world with songs playing a central role in the movement, was produced for €240,000 by Pertti Veijalainen for Illume Oy with support from the Finnish Film Foundation (who is handling sales), AVEK, ESEK and Finnish broadcaster YLE TV2. The latter has selected the film to be candidate for the Prix Europa Documentary series at the upcoming Prix Europa Festival in Berlin (October 14-21, 2006), which will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.

Illume Oy was set up in 1987 by director/producer Jouko Aaltonen, cinematographer/producer Pertti Verjolainen (a graduate of EAVE from the MEDIA Programme) and anthropologist Heimo Lappalainen to create documentary films, television programmes and anthropological/ethnographic films. Many of their productions have won international prizes, including Kusum (2000), about an Indian girl who is healed by a traditional Indian healer, and Blatnoi Mir (2001) about three prisoners in a Russian prison servicing life sentences.
