BOX OFFICE Spain

Boycott doesn't haunt Scary Movie 4

by

Despite the campaign led by Spanish exhibitors Yelmo Cineplex, Cinesa, Ábaco and Cinebox against major distributor Buena Vista International (see news), Scary Movie 4 was the most successful title this past weekend. Screening in 400 theatres, the film sold 269,797 admissions and grossed over €1.4m.

This box office results were, however, low compared to those of Scary Movie 3 in its opening weekend in 2004. Screening in 418 theatres, that film attracted 617,425 moviegoers and grossed over €3m.

Of last weekend's top 5, fifth place belongs to José Luis Cuerda's new feature, The Education of Fairies (see news), which Alta Films distributed in 229 theatres. This co-production between Spain, Argentina, France and Portugal garnered 71,515 admissions and grossed €405,884.
