A horse named Mississippi
Filming kicked off yesterday at Schaalsee in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Hände weg von Mississippi (lit. "Hands Off Mississippi"), the upcoming film from Detlev Buck, whose Tough Enough [+see also:

film profile] was released on March 9.
Based on the eponymous children's book by Cornelia Funke, it will be adapted for the screen by Maggie Peren and Stefan Schaller. Hände weg von Mississippi is a bucolic tale of the young Emma, who is threatened by the evil heir who wants to take back Mississippi – the horse he gave Dolly as a gift – and the young girl's eccentric grandmother, who is more at home working on the farm with tools and animals than knitting and baking cakes.
The young heroine is played by Zoe Mannhardt, while the role of Dolly goes to Katharina Thalbach – daughter of actress Sabine Thalbach and director Benno Besson, who starred alongside Buck in Haussmann's Kabale und Liebe.
The film received €350,000 in funding from the FFA and, like Tough Enough, is being produced by the Berlin-based outfit Boje Buck (co-directed by Buck), in co-production with the ZDF. It is also backed by FilmFörderung Hamburg (€300,000) and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (€400,000).
Shooting is due to finish at the end of August and Delphi Film-Verleih will handle distribution of the film, which is scheduled for release in spring 2007.
