Binoche on the set of Orsay

by

Shooting began in Paris Tuesday on Orsay by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien.

The French production is one of four features being made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Musée d’Orsay. The sole condition to be met in making the features is to show the museum building at least once during the film.

Recounting the stay of a Chinese student in Paris employed as a babysitter by Juliette Binoche, the film follows the mishaps of the young woman and the boy whom she looks after. Sharing the same imaginary world, they are followed by a strange red ball; one that will be familiar to viewers of Albert Lamorisse’s Le ballon rouge, Palme d'Or winner for Best Short Film at Cannes in 1956.

Produced by François Margolin for Margo films, in co-production with Canal +, the €3m Orsay has been granted pre-sales and co-production financing from Arte France Cinéma.

After Orsay, the producer will make a second feature in the programme entitled Souvenirs du Valois (lit. “Memories of Valois”), directed by Olivier Assayas and starring Binoche, François Cluzet and Charles Berling.

However, Margo will first have to wait for the French director to finish Boarding Gate (see news). The film’s shooting kicked off only on July 3 after several ups and downs, which saw Margo Films take over the reins of the project originally launched by Rectangle Productions.

Boarding Gate is being co-produced by MK2, who are also handling the film’s French distribution as well as international sales.

The two other features lined up in the Musée d’Orsay project are by Raoul Ruiz and Jim Jarmusch.
