The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is organising a conference in Essen in November on the role of the media in European societies affected by immigration.

Last week, Culture Commissioner Jan Figel met the new president of the EBU, Fritz Pleitgen, to discuss major issues in European policy impacting the activities and roles of public broadcasting services, as well as the objectives to be pursued by the European Year for Intercultural Dialogue 2008. Mr Pleitgen indicated that "dialogue between different cultures is of particular interest to audiovisual media".
