Aki Kaurismäki´s Lights in the Dusk [+see also:

has been selected by Finland as its 2007 Oscar candidate for Best Foreign Language Film.

The jury, who preferred Kaurismäki’s Lights to 13 other Finnish titles, described it as a “stylish, complete, professionally made film that is clearly the work of an artist.” Produced, written, directed and edited by the Finnish master filmmaker, the final part of his trilogy, following Drifting Clouds (1996) and The Man Without a Past [+see also:

(2002), had its international premiere at the last Cannes Film Festival in official competition.

The film was co-produced with Germany (Pandora) and France (Pyramide Distribution). International sales are being handled by The Match Factory GmbH while the French release through Pyramide is scheduled for October 25. The 79th Academy Awards nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category will be announced on January 23, 2007 and the Oscar gala will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 25, 2007.
